British National Overseas (BNO)


The UK government has recently announced to open a British National Overseas (BNO) visa for the British National Overseas and their close family members from 31 January 2021.

The applicants will be able to apply for entry clearance or leave to remain and will be granted initially 30 months visa extendable for further 30 months. After 5 years they will be eligible to apply for settlement and later British nationality. Applicants will be able to apply from outside or inside the UK.

Successful applicants can:

  • work
  • study (including applying for higher education courses)
  • use the NHS services

Successful applicants cannot:

  • claim public funds

Family members

BNO passport holder can also apply for their family members who normally live them including:

  • spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner
  • child (under the age of 18)
  • adult child born on or after 1 July 1997 (and their spouse, or child under the age of 18)
  • other family members (parent, grandparent, brother, sister, son or daughter) in exceptional circumstances where there is a high level of dependency

Children under 18 must intend to live with their parents during their stay in the UK, unless there is a good reason why they cannot.

Residency Requirements

If applying from outside the UK, the applicant and their family members must normally live in Hong Kong.

If applicant already in the UK, then they must normally live in the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, or Hong Kong.

Financial Requirement:

The applicant must show that they can accommodate and provide financial support for themselves and their family members for at least 6 months in the UK.

  • money in their bank account
  • income they get from a current job in the UK (including self-employment)
  • any other income like rental income
  • offers of support or accommodation from friends or family

Evidence includes:

  • bank statements
  • letters from friends or family with evidence they have the money to support

You won’t need to meet this requirement if you’ve been living in the UK for more than a year when you apply.

TB Test Certificate

If the applicant has been living in Honk Kong for last 6 months then they need TB test certificate from approved centre, If they already in the UK on short term visit of 6 months or less they need TB test certificate from approved TB test centres in the UK.

How to Apply

Applicants will be open from the BNO visa from 31 January 2021.

  • £180 to apply to stay for 30 months each application
  • £250 to apply to stay for 5 years each application


Immigration Health Surcharge


For each adult this will be:

  • £1,560 to stay for 30 months
  • £3,120 to stay for 5 years

For each child under the age of 18, this will be:

  • £1,175 to stay for 30 months
  • £2,350 to stay for 5 years
